There is no such thing as a "subtype" in SMW.
Area is not a built-in type of SMW.

These use typically all use linear unit conversions can be defined in SMW for
single wikis, and do not need to be hard-coded. Look at the page of Type:Area
to see how it was defined, or see the documentation for details. We may add
things like acoustic pressure (or similar cases where logarithmic units are
used) that cannot be defined with linear unit conversions. Temperature is
defined because the involved conversions are not (strictly) linear but
