Okay, now I think I understand the issue. So, first of all, feel free to ignore my last email, which was irrelevant. Second, I still think you should stick with the existing system, though I can see the argument in the other direction now. But I agree with Reini that, given that the two mean very different things in terms of the data structure, it's helpful that they are notated in different ways.

The biggest argument in favor of merging the two seems to be that a simplified syntax would make it easier for new users to start using the technology. But I'm of the view that users should always be using templates anyway, never editing semantic tags directly. So the ugliness/niceness of the syntax shouldn't be an issue.
