Actually SSL can also provide moderately strong authentication via the
use of X.509 certificates, but getting a cert onto devices without
filesystems (Palm's and WinCE 1.0, for example) would be a nightmare.

* (Yes, PalmOS has "records" and there are various third party tools to
get around the lack of direct file storage, but it'll be just simpler to
discount the certificate stuff in this context.)
