A lot of people are really used to the convention of checking if the middle digit is even or odd, thanks to the linux kernel. If the even=stable, odd=developmental convention is used, it makes sense to do it in the minor rev simply because so many people are trained to look at that digit. Personally, I'd like to see the patch level incremented much more frequently, regardless of what happens with the major and minor revs. I think this really helps out end users who occasionally do an anonymous cvs checkout or download the nightly builds, as the string reported with -v and the filename of the nightly build change as features are added and bugs get fixed. This also makes it easier for novice users to report bugs, as a 2.3.24 bug would narrow it down a lot better than what usually gets put in the bug tracker today. There is still plenty of room for stable releases using the major and minor revs. Paul |
