I think it's actually the other way around, make SDCC build run on older distributions.
It's because on those old distributions, GLIBCXX_3.4.20 is not available.
For instance as stated on bug #2342 by valen, on Ubuntu 14.04 which is the latest LTS version of Ubuntu, it's not available, and it's only ~18 months old.
