Greetings, I upgraded my desktop to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS this past weekend. I had previously upgraded my laptop back in May. When I upgraded my laptop back in May, I compiled Scramdisk from source code and mounted successfully a container file sitting on my laptop's hard drive. This made me think everything would be fine with my desktop upgrade. However, when I compiled it on my desktop after the upgrade and tried to mount a container on an externally-connected (via USB) IDE hard drive, Scramdisk hangs because it cannot find the mount point--you have to force a quit; after which Scramdisk can be restarted and you see the container mounted but with no mount point specified. This happens when choosing either the default mount point or a user-specified mount point. Thinking that I might not have compiled Scramdisk correctly, I then checked and even installed it from a .deb file created on my laptop. Still no-go. Then I hooked up the external hard drive (USB connection) to my laptop and got the same error.The error thus replicates on two computers. Has anyone experienced this? If not, can anyone replicate this? Any ideas where I should look for logged error messages? Stewart |

I have followed Stewart and Jonathan's directions to compile on Ubuntu 10.11. I have left out texlive-latex-extra for later, so the error on producing the docs can be ignored; but I am getting two other errors. One related to scramdisk.ko (kernel module?) and the other related to kernal_build.h, which it says it can't find. I _do_ have linux-headers-generic installed, so that's not the problem. Shell output on "sudo make install" is below. The steps I followed to install necessary packages is below that. Note that I have never had ScramDisk installed before this attempt. Thanks in advance for any insight (and already thank you to Stewart and Jonathan). /DA --------- root@Tyan-S3970:/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1# sudo make install list='crypto driver utils gui docs'; for subdir in $list; \ do make -C $subdir install; done make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1/crypto' make[1]: Nothing to be done for `install'. make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1/crypto' make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1/driver' if ! test -d /lib/modules/scramdisk; then \ mkdir -p /lib/modules/scramdisk; \ fi && \ install -m 644 scramdisk.ko /lib/modules/scramdisk && \ cd /lib/modules/3.0.0-15-generic/extra && \ ln -s ../../scramdisk/scramdisk.ko scramdisk.ko && \ depmod -F /boot/System.map-`uname -r` install: cannot stat `scramdisk.ko': No such file or directory make[1]: *** [install] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1/driver' make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1/utils' g++ -I. -I../crypto -I../driver -O2 -Wall -c -o sdmount.o sdmount.cpp In file included from args.h:99:0, from sdmount.cpp:157: ../driver/version.h:85:26: fatal error: kernel_build.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated. make[1]: *** [sdmount.o] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1/utils' make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1/gui' make[1]: *** No rule to make target `install'. Today when I saw this might be a problem, I re-enabled the "proposed" repositories and checked again. Still no linux-header packages. But after I sent this email, I went and checked a second time. Lo and behold, they were now available, so I installed them. I then was successfully able to build Scramdisk from source as per Jonathan's instructions. There must have been a time delay between my re-enabling the proposed- repositories and the updates showing themselves as available. Thanks, Jonathan. Make the following changes to compile SD4L on Ubuntu 11.10 and possibly on other systems with 3.0 series kernel. 1) In the main Makefile, in the "drv:" section, change the line elif test "$(MINOR)" = "6"; then \ to elif test "$(MINOR)" = "6" -o "$(MAJOR)" = "3"; then \ 2) In the "driver" folder Makefile, replace the line ifeq ($(MINOR),6) with lines: KERNEL_GT_26 = ($(MAJOR) >= 3) || ($(MINOR) > 6) ifneq ($(KERNEL_GT_26),0) Then, just run "make deb" and install the resulting Debian package. |

Hello all, Today I upgraded the linux kernel from 2.6.38-11-generic to 2.6.38-12-generic (Ubuntu 11.04). I then recompiled Scramdisk from source and installed. However, when I try to mount a container, I get: "kernel module isn't loaded or device node is missing". How to fix? Stewart |

Ulrich, The find command found nothing. But I do have many different files named bitops.h in the /usr/src/linux-headers-3.0.0-12 directories on my system. Looking at the Makefile, I can't see what to change. There is no path specified to /lib/modules that I can change to /usr/src/linux-headers. Is there some other file where this is specified? I need another clue or two. Thanks. On 11-10-20 03:52 PM, Hans-Ulrich Juettner wrote: > Hi Jonathan, > > I'm sorry, I haven't tried to compile SD4l on Ubuntu 11.10 or > with a 3.0 kernel. I first found this thread: http://sysad.wordpress.com/2008/11/06/ubuntu-hardy-to-intrepid-upgrade-remnants/ And then tried installing texlive-fonts-recommended. Didn't work. Then rather than experiment I took the plunge and installed texlive-full. That did the trick, allowing me to run the 'sudo make' and 'sudo make deb' commands to build a .deb file and install the package. However, Ubuntu warned me that the package was 'bad' during the installation and gave me the option of quitting. (I ignored it and installed anyway). I tested my package and it works with linux kernel 2.6.38-8-generic. However, it still doesn't work with the linux kernel 2.6.38-8-generic-pae. For now, I've edited the /etc/default/grub file to boot to the kernel 2.6.38-8-generic. Hans-Ullrich, are there any plans to support the generic-pae packages? Not urgent, this is a 32-bit system with 4 GB of RAM. Also, have you given any thought of separating the documentation from the build itself and merely including it in the source package file? Something apparently happened in the requirements to build the documentation between 10.10 and 11.04. Best regards, Stewart > Hello all. > > I updated my laptop to Ubuntu 11.04. Hello all. I updated my laptop to Ubuntu 11.04. The relevant kernels installed were the 2.6.38-8-generic-pae and the 2.6.38-8-generic. When I tried compiling this with the 2.6.38-8-generic-pae, with 'sudo make', it crashed out when it didn't find a the directory /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic-pae/Build ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stimpy@stimpy-laptop:/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1$ sudo make [sudo] password for stimpy: cd gui && qmake && lrelease scramdisk_de.ts echo "#define KERNEL_BUILD \"2.6.38\"" > driver/kernel_build.h list='crypto driver utils gui docs'; for subdir in $list; \ do make -C $subdir all || exit 1; done make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1/crypto' gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o getiv.o getiv.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o gf2e64.o gf2e64.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o gf2e128.o gf2e128.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o crc32.o crc32.c gcc -I. -O2 -Wall -o crc32-mktab crc32-mktab.c ./crc32-mktab -p 0x04c11db7 -b 32 -B 8 -r -c \ -s crc32_table -i crc32.h -t uint32 -o crc32-tab.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o crc32-tab.o crc32-tab.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o sha1.o sha1.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o sha256.o sha256.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o sha512.o sha512.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o rmd160.o rmd160.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o whirlpool.o whirlpool.c gcc -I. -O2 -Wall -o blowfish-mktab blowfish-mktab.c ./blowfish-mktab > blowfish-tab.h [.............................................................] gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o blowfish.o blowfish.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o cast128.o cast128.c gcc -I. -O2 -Wall -o des-mktab des-mktab.c ./des-mktab > des-tab.h gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o des-base.o des-base.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o des.o des.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o des3.o des3.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o tea.o tea.c gcc -I. -O2 -Wall -o rijndael-mktab rijndael-mktab.c ./rijndael-mktab > rijndael-tab.h gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o rijndael.o rijndael.c gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o serpent.o serpent.c gcc -I. -O2 -Wall -o square-mktab square-mktab.c ./square-mktab > square-tab.h gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o square.o square.c square.c: In function ‘square_init’: square.c:91:10: warning: array subscript is above array bounds gcc -I. -O2 -Wall -o twofish-mktab twofish-mktab.c ./twofish-mktab > twofish-tab.h gcc -I. -I/usr/src/linux/include -O2 -Wall -c -o twofish.o twofish.c ar rc libsdcrypto.a getiv.o gf2e64.o gf2e128.o crc32.o crc32-tab.o sha1.o sha256.o sha512.o rmd160.o whirlpool.o blowfish.o cast128.o des-base.o des.o des3.o tea.o rijndael.o serpent.o square.o twofish.o ranlib libsdcrypto.a make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1/crypto' make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1/driver' ln -s ../crypto/crc32.c crc32.c ln -s ../crypto/crc32-tab.c crc32-tab.c ln -s ../crypto/sha1.c sha1.c ln -s ../crypto/sha256.c sha256.c ln -s ../crypto/sha512.c sha512.c ln -s ../crypto/rmd160.c rmd160.c ln -s ../crypto/whirlpool.c whirlpool.c ln -s ../crypto/blowfish.c blowfish.c ln -s ../crypto/cast128.c cast128.c ln -s ../crypto/des-base.c des-base.c ln -s ../crypto/des.c des.c ln -s ../crypto/des3.c des3.c ln -s ../crypto/tea.c tea.c ln -s ../crypto/rijndael.c rijndael.c ln -s ../crypto/serpent.c serpent.c ln -s ../crypto/square.c square.c ln -s ../crypto/twofish.c twofish.c ln -s ../crypto/gf2e64.c gf2e64.c ln -s ../crypto/gf2e128.c gf2e128.c ln -s ../crypto/getiv.c getiv.c make -C /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic-pae/build SUBDIRS=/usr/src/linux/ScramDisk-2.1/driver modules make: Entering an unknown directory make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic-pae/build: No such file or directory. Hi Stewart. I just finished creating a 130GB TrueCrypt volume on an external USB drive. It took 9 hours. I call that slow because simply creating and formatting a partition with the operating system takes minutes, not hours. Is it the encryption that takes so much time? Even though the data is all null, the result of the encryption isn't. Observing the drive light, it's clear that the drive is only active occasionally - a few seconds in each minute. . The rest of the time could be computation. Creating a new volume isn't something you would do often. And I can live with it being slow as long as it works. Using version 2.1-0 built on kernel 2.6.35-28-generic (AMD 64-bit), I find container creation is very slow. It took 45 minutes to create a 10G TrueCrypt 7 partition on an external USB drive. Is this normal? The disk drive light shows a second or so of activity every 30 seconds. When the operating system formats a partition, the disk is continuously active for the few minutes required to complete the task. Thanks. |

Thanks Jonathan. Compiling SD4L from source code proved to be surprisingly easy, like most riddles and problems--once you see the answer. Hans-Ulrich, I created the .deb file for 2.6.32-29 for Ubuntu. I would be happy to share any Scramdisk .deb files I create, provided that they are suitable for distribution. Reading this page, however, makes me wonder if they would be as-is when created on my system this way: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/Complete Some of these requirements I think you've already addressed in your distribution, but I'm such a "caveman" at this. I still think it would be wonderful if SD4L were included amongst the maintained Ubuntu program distribution, as it's better maintained than some programs that *are* listed. > >> You could even try starting your current ScramDisk -- the > >> one that has the problem -- as root.
