Prior to esx 5 the scsi id was part of the key meta data used to identify a lun.

Perhaps newer versions do this, but an ESXi 4 install I was working with
recently refused to recognise luns after I renumbered them... Once I set
them back to what it had, it was happy to see all the VMFS volumes again.

Just adding to the knowledge pool...
