Hi, thanks for great software. My subject line says it all. Like, right now I can only measure horizontal and/or vertical. It would be cool if I could either have a diagonal mode, or even better, a mode with a hotkey that lets you rotate it with for example the mouse, as much as you want. There are times when you need to measure things that are not perpendicular! :)
I attempted to change the ruler to centimeters in the 'Calibrate the ruler' option for our field. However, the new setting wasn't saved, and my screen still shows an unusual ruler scale.
When I try to execute screenruler.exe in the new version, I initially get a Win message indicating caution (an unrecognized source), then when I go ahead and say "yes, execute", nothing happens. What might be the problem? The next-to-latest runs on my machine fine.

Hi Alex Thanks for making this useful utility. It seems that there is only "one" setting for all orientations. It would be great if you could save a setting for horizontal and another for vertical. Thanks
I need to place markers at 125, 250, 375 etc. Positioning the cursor to set the marker exactly doesn't work reliably. The Edit Markers dialog shows up/down arrows for each marker which one would presume to allow tweaking the position. My problem is I can't figure out how to adjust the marker position.
Hello, Great tool! I appreciate the configuration options and how it can be customized. God job! There is one thing which could be added to configuration that would enhance it. Right now the counting starts from 0 (zero) so I need to subtract 1 pixel when I want to measure a component size on the screen. See marked pixels on my screenshot attached. It would be good if the pixels covered by the ruler are counted (not one pixel after). In other words 100 pixel ruler width should shows 100th measured...
HOW DO I USE THE RULER AFTER DOWNLOADING IT
Are there any plans to create an installer? Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'm not a fan of portable applications because it takes some effort to find a home for them and create a shortcut for Start menu so I can launch them.
I came here to ask about the same issue. The screen ruler is very useful to me to keep my place on a document on my right monitor when entering data from the document into my accounting software on my left monitor, but each time I open Screen Ruler I have to change the color, opacity, choose slim, and hide the ruler scale. I don't see a portable.config file in the app folder. I do see a screenruler.exe.config
Is there a way to set the ruler so only the percentage numbers range from 1 to 100%? I want those numbers to stay constant with the ruler width.
I agree with Miguel. I just spent an hour trying to figure out how to copy a shortcut for screenruler.exe to my start menu shortcuts folder. No joy. Online instructions for locating the relevant folder didn't work, even though I unhid the folders in the relevant path. There needs to be an easy way to get this program in there. I really don't want to go get an installer app in order to do this. Can anyone help?
Miguel: You can make an installer with Inno setup Compiler, it is simple to do. I have created with Inno setup compiler a setup.exe that works. I am only worried about the portable, I uploaded only the .exe to virus total and it gives me several detections (about 3); possibly a false positive.

The answer is: * Click on the minimized ruler rectangle * Click {Windows} + {up arrow} And boom, it's back!
I see the shortcut to minimize the ruler. It works just fine. How do I restore it? Thanks

Cannot find French in Language...
Hi, I'm seeking for French .dll for Screen Ruler (french version)
To change the language: Right-click on the ruler. Select "About". At bottom of the displayed "About Screen Ruler" form, select the desired "Application Language" and then click "Apply".
Hi, How I can change the language? Thanks Nelson André Hofer de Carvalho Brasil
Hi again, the option to configure keyboard shortcuts has been added in v.0.10.0 of Screen Ruler.
Hi again, the option to configure keyboard shortcuts has been added in v.0.10.0 of Screen ruler.
Update: As the current version of ScreenRuler has various issues with display scaling, high-DPI monitors and calibration, version 0.10.0 will introduce a new scaling/ calibration mechanism. Please refer to https://github.com/Bluegrams/ScreenRuler/issues/52 for more info. Second update: Version 0.10.0 has been released: http://bluegrams.com/blog/2022/09/screen-ruler-0-10-with-improved-scaling-calibration-and-configuration.html
Screen Ruler 0.10 with Improved Scaling, Calibration and Configuration
It would be great if by overfly with mouse hide all infos (width height position) as a real and simple ruler ;)
Based on various feedback in this thread, significant changes to the display scaling behavior and ruler calibration are planned for the next version. There is a pre-release version available for testing. Please refer to https://github.com/Bluegrams/ScreenRuler/issues/52 for more information. Feel free to give feedback if there are any issues with that version.

I've been using Chocolatey to deploy and update Screen Ruler, but Microsoft has come along with their own version of the software install/manage/upgrade packager. I am no expert in version control, forking, branching, etc. but if someone understands that can you add Screen Ruler to the package repository? https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/package-manager/package/
For Chocolatey I issue the command to install: choco install screenruler -y For Microsoft it should be something like: winget install -e --id Bluegrams.ScreenRuler
Hi guys, thank you very much for your ScreenRuler Software. I found it because I was looking for an aid to process lists that come as PDF. I used to print the list and track where I am with a ruler ... As a suggestion to improve the ScreenRuler, it would be great if it was located in the task bar (like GreenShot and other utilities, started with windows logon) and be shown and hidden using a configurable keyboard shortcut. With this functionality, the user could pick up or hide the ruler with the...
Hello, Thank you very much for your interest in Screen Ruler. Please keep in mind that this tool is developed as a free-to-use, open-source application mostly by a single person. Therefore, I can't give any guarantees on software quality or updates. Best regards, Alex
I was wondering too, that the ruler was not identically with LibreOffice Cals's spacing... For calibration I used LibreOffice Calc and I set the spaces between the rows to 1 cm and I changed the values so long the ruler display the correct spacing. I use currently a Sharp HD TV (1920x1080@60 MHz) and the values of DPI in the ruler was to less, so far 68 DPI instead of the true value of 94 DPI @ 100% view. Edit: When I set to 0.5 cm, the values are incorrect 🤔 I'm confused now...

Hi, Thanks for this suggestion. I will look into adding the option to configure keyboard shortcuts in an upcoming version. Regards, Alex
Hi, This program does not have to be uninstalled as it does not install anything on your PC. Screen Ruler runs fully portable from the folder it is located in.
Dear Screenruler team, We need to use an on-screen tool for the validation of a piece of internally developed software (Visual Analog Scales) and would like to use your Screen Ruler tool. To this end we have to have a ruler program which itself is validated. Could you please tell us if you have ever validated the program and/or what we need to do to have documentation of its calibration? A validation certificate stating that you have followed an SDLC, based on your quality system rules would be great....
How do you uninstall this program? It doesn't show up in the Control Panel, or with the programs displayed when you click on the Start button. I really don't want to mess around in the registry.
Hello, I want to use the app on another, and I need to use the space bar to move in this second app, unfortunately this makes the rule mode change every time. Is it possible to block, delete or modify the shortcut adjacent to this function? Sincerely, Have a good day
Screen Ruler Updated to v.0.9.1
Yes pls. review the calibration - this would be really great ! Hotkey's (fine and coarse) + Mouse wheel would be perfect. I'm working with CAD files and zoom. Therefore I need to adjust calibration often. By the way, can't find the donation button ;-)

Hi! Glad you find Screen Ruler useful. The tooltip can be disabled in the settings: Go to Settings -> Advanced -> Miscellaneous and uncheck Show Tool Tip. Alex
Hi! I think the screen ruler is amazing, im using this to apply some reading techniques on the screen text. I was wondering if its possible to hide the tooltip in yellow that shows the width, height, position
Hi That's excellent, many thanks - I'll give it a go. Hi, it's been quite a while, but your feature request has found its way to v.0.9 of Screen Ruler that has support for horizontal and vertical flipping (using F and Shift+F via keyboard shortcuts). Hope this helps!

Hi, usually, settings should be saved automatically, so this might be a bug. All settings are usually saved in a portable.config file in the app folder. Could you check if this file is created and non-empty? Alex
Great app, but PLEASE add standard architectural scales, such as 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8, etc. For example 1/8 scale would translate 1/8 inch to 1 foot (or 1 unit). This would be super simple to add as it is simply changing the scale for the inches unit. Thanks!
Hi, thanks for the suggestion and sorry for the delayed answer. What you describe makes sense to me, so I I'll try to consider this with a coming feature update. Regards Alex
Hi and sorry for the late answer, A) This should be possible via Right Click -> "Stay on Top" or by pressing S when the ruler is focused. B) The settings in Advanced -> Control are for resizing the ruler either via the mouse wheel (Shift + mouse wheel) or the keyboard (Ctrl + Shift + arrow keys). Are those the settings you're referring to? C) That should happen automatically usually, so this might be a bug. Assuming you're using the portable version here from SourceForge, the settings should be saved...
The ruler indicator for "current" position is too high on the ruler so it's not easy to see. It used to be in the white space below the measurements. Not as bad on vertical. Is this a setting to adjust? See attached. Thanks!
This works! Thank you so much~~
I'm using a 17.3 inch screen (1920x1080), 125% scaling (Windows), and 96 DPI (I assume so because I've never adjusted it). 1) Pixel-wise: the screen ruler calibrates properly to 1920x1080 when using the method described below, namely the Override high DPI scaling setting from Window's property. 2) Centimeter-wise: the screen ruler can never calibrate correctly (I've stuck an actual ruler to my monitor FYI), regardless of my changing of the Display Scaling, Override high DPI scaling, or any combination...
Every time i open the ruler I have to start from scratch - is there a way to save the setting to dark and bi level ?
HI Thanks for this very versatile screen ruler, it's a great utility. An additional feature that would greatly enhance it from our perspective would be the ability to invoke it positioned at a particular window and save the coordinates of a selected position - Ideally, for our use case the window handle of the target window as a calling parameter would be great, we could then call it without having to use the Z option to select the required window. e.g something like "c:\ruler\screenruler.exe -H26425"...
Hello, A) I really miss to have your ruler "On Top". Or can I set up anyhow in the options? The reason is, I use an application on full screen and must set some stuff. Then the ruler disappear. And the original application, miss my mouse position. I there any chance to add the .OnTop feature? B) I have tried to speed up your ruler by setting the lines distance to 1,100,1000 in extend setup. But no changes. Perhaps a bug? C) You should save the ruler size on exit. And try to use these values for the...

Great! Eagerly waiting for that! PS: I've found something that looks like a bug: sometimes, when launching the ruler, the "Stay On Top" setting seems to be forgotten... and ruler moves behind any window... Gonna search for the "bugs" page anyway ;)
Hi, Thanks for your feedback, glad you find Screen Ruler useful! Your suggestion definitely sounds plausible. I'll try to implement it for the next release. Alex
Hello, First, kudos for your work and efforts, I'm a satisfied user of Screen Ruler :) I'm using it mostly to align/size stuff in text documents, like tables/spreadsheets WIDTH. Therefore, it would be really convienient to have the horizontal ruler at left to measure from the left side of any page, something like +------------------------+ | | +----------------+ | | |
You can dismiss the update reminder starting with version v.0.8.1.
Screen Ruler Updated to v.0.8.1
Hello Hermann, thanks for your suggestions. adding new scales should be possible (ScreenRuler supports pixels, centimeters, points, inches and percent at the moment). I'm however not familiar with mV or ps. Could you add some pointers so I can implement them? angle measurement and rotation are requested frequently. They are not easy to add with the current implementation. I'll see what I can do about this but this is unlikely to be added soon. always on top is possible either via the context menu...
Is there way to disable the update reminder?
Hello, so far I was using MB-ruler, but this seems not any more developped further and it seems to slow down the system during usage, so I'm looking for an alternative and found ScreenRuler. Features that I really liked in MB-Ruler: - change the scales: e.g .mV and ps could be used - Angle measurements (MB-ruler is a triangle ruler) - rotation in any direction - always on top (I did not find this feature in Screen Ruler) - simple calibartion: select start and endpoint of a line, tell the length,...
Hi There, I like this tool. Now I've got some more tasks to do. This includes to measure old drawings or pictures. Sometimes the ratio doesn't fit. So I have to calibrate the ruler for each drawing. - it would be more convenient If I could do this with a key (x) and the mouse wheel. If the ratio doesn't fit, then scaling y the same way with (y) and the mouse wheel And if you inlcude angular measuring, the ratio should be corrected. But calibrating with mouse wheel, would be my most wanted feature...
Right click the icon and select "properties" then from Compatibility tab click "Change settings for all users", then "Change high DPI settings" and check "Override high DPI scaling..." checkbox.
Thanks for your feedback and glad that you like this app! I love the tool, but admittedly I too have trouble calibrating. Not a big thing though, I can do it all relative. Agree that there is still room for improvement regarding display scaling and high-dpi support. I'll look into this again some time soon. Would it not be possible to make it turn around one of its corners as well so that you can put the ruler under an angle? This has been requested a couple of times already. Sadly I think it is...
Sorry to use anonymous, but I can not access my gmail here in China at the moment. I love the tool, but admittedly I too have trouble calibrating. Not a big thing though, I can do it all relative. However, I have 1 suggestion. Right now we can choose horizontal, vertical or both. But sometimes things are neither horizontal nor vertical, but under an angle. Would it not be possible to make it turn around one of its corners as well so that you can put the ruler under an angle? And while thinking about...
