I'm trying to install version 0.6.
configure works fine, then make exits with the error:
libtool: link: cannot find the library `/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.la'
any ideas?

This is a problem with your system, not screem. The same problem will occur when building any GTK application. There are RPMS of screem available for RH9 at http://shrike.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=1003
