Default value of selection.alpha=30 in global settings may cause problems when reduced number of colors is available in system (for example when using some kind of remote desktop in Windows with color depth reduced to minimize bandwidth). In such cases alpha 30 may be interpolated to white making selection completely invisible. It looks like selection.alpha=32 solves that problem.

    Committed, just for Windows as GTK+ remoting is different.

    If the colour depth is reduced to 256 colours then you should be changing to palette mode and turning off alpha:
    use.palette=1
    selection.alpha=256
    selection.back=#DADADA
