In applications that don't support on-the-spot input (like Second Life), the fallback is over-the-spot. But active text in compose window is nothing but a black square! It can't be read!
I haven't played Second Life for two years so I don't know, and I'm using SCIM-Bridge 1.4.14. Perhaps you could check instead? The Second Life browser is free. Other than that, Inkscape also displays a similar behaviour - you can't see what you're typing...

Thank you for reporting back. Since you are most familiar with the issue it would be best if you verified. I'm really only going through the sf.net tracker closing tickets since we moved to github a long time ago. If an issue is still open it would be good to create a ticket on https://github.com/scim-im/scim/issues/ That is, if it's still present in 1.4.17, of course. You can try it via my backports at https://launchpad.net/~r0lf/+archive/ubuntu/stable
