First, a few questions before I tell you my "story" (see below the email I wrote 3 days ago) 1) How does ScidVsPC differ from SCID and chessDB ? 2) Are the names and rating files up to date and updated regularly ? 3) Is there any active development and any roadmap for future releases? 4) Any plan to push the 16 million games limit any time soon? 5) Is the old format (chessDB and the previous SCID format) recognized by ScidVsPC ? Now, my new project. Here's what I posted to a few newsgroups, Yahoo groups and Goggle groups... Hope you enjoy. Obviously, it struck me that without new ratings and names files (SCID and chessDB files are outdated), I'll have to use ScidVsPC to make sure I cleanup the master database effectively. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello everyone, I have started a blog (chessgamesrepository.wordpress.com) for one simple reason : frustration. How many of you quietly download and collect tons of PGN games that you patiently import into your database? We all do the same and waste tons of time, effort and bandwith while we could all cooperate and make things so much easier! I came to the conclusion that if we all share the effort, everything would be so simple! That’s why I’ll start collecting PGN files and import them into one master database that we will all share. FOR FREE obviously! I’m planning on releasing a new database once a month. I will use ChessDB (available for Unix and Windows) to manage the master database. I’m not decided on what to include/exclude in this database but I’m thinking on keeping only games where one of the player has over 2200 ELO rating. I guess we don’t want crap in this database. Anyhow, suggestions are welcome and discussion takes place in the new Yahoo group I just created (http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/ chessgamesrepository)! I’m open to discussion regarding what to keep, what to exclude, what to normalize, etc. If you have games in ChessAssistant format, ChessBase, SCID, Scid vs PC, ChessX, ChessMaster, etc., you’re more than welcome to help and convert them into PGN format. If you own one of these chess databases, I will probably need your help to convert some of those files into PGN. The more we are, the better! Ten million games in 6 months is my goal. One contributor per country is also another goal I have! Every country has a chess federation/association/league, everyone of you knows a chess club we don’t know about, everyone of you has its site no one knows about, everyone of you has games others don’t have, etc. Together, we’re better, stronger, smarter! Together, as a community of chess players, we can help each other towards a common goal : make a damn good and huge database of chess games! If you have questions or comments, you can answer me privately at: chessgamesrepository [@] yahoo [dot] com If you're interested: Our blog: chessgamesrepository.wordpress.com Our discussion group: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/chessgamesrepository/ Our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TheChessGamesRepository Our email: chessgamesrepository [@] yahoo [dot] com Thanks! ----------------- Benoit St-Jean Yahoo! Your proposal sounds very interesting. A free quality database is the main thing Scid is missing. I'm sure lots of people here would be interested, But it's probably a hard thing to do well. >1) How does ScidVsPC differ from SCID and chessDB ? Proably best summed up here http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net/#toc2 >2) Are the names and rating files up to date and updated regularly ? Th spelling file with ScidvsPC-4.8/svn is a custom one from January 2012. And you can always download and use the current spelling.ssp from Franz Nagl's site. >3) Is there any active development and any roadmap for future releases? Yes. :) >4) Any plan to push the 16 million games limit any time soon? This will be done if/when .si5 is released i think. I'm not sure how hard it will be to do, but it can't be done with .si4. >5) Is the old format (chessDB and the previous SCID format) recognized by ScidVsPC ? Sure. ScidvsPC will ask to upgrade si3 databses to si4 when you open them. Steve |

It also shares code with SCID, the database stuff is refactored to JNI if I read the notes correctly. -- Santa |

But anyway, your initiative seems very interesting. What I think most people do regarding the issue is just download the games from TWIC every week. But even for Mark Crowther is not possible to reach all events. That is why in the Games section of NowInChess.com I keep track of many tournaments not covered by TWIC and offer them as a monthly download. You can aso use them for your database, of course. Sorry for the crosspost to those following also Chessdb list. -- Saludos. Gerardo Fernandez. http://www.NowInChess.com |

Hi, I’m suddenly unable to load any of the nice ‘extra’ piece sets on Mac. I made some changes to my Mac which might have broken something? The problem occurs with any version of ScidVsPC so it’s not a version problem. After trawling around the web I wonder if I’m missing tkImg. Are other Mac users able to load the ‘extra’ piece sets? Cheers, Steve Error: couldn't recognize image data couldn't recognize image data while executing "image create photo tempPieces$font$size -data $::pieceImageData($font,$size)" (procedure "setPieceData" line 5) invoked from within "setPieceData $font $size" (procedure "setPieceFont" line 4) invoked from within "setPieceFont Fritz" invoked from within ".bdOptions.pieces1.fritz invoke" ("uplevel" body line 1) invoked from within "uplevel #0 [list $w invoke]" (procedure "tk::ButtonUp" line 23) invoked from within "tk::ButtonUp .bdOptions.pieces1.fritz" (command bound to event) |

Someone else had this recently. I think it is an OS X configuration problem. Please mv $HOME/.scidvspc $HOME/.scidvspc_broke (and send me a copy) and see if that fixes it. Good morning Steven, Thanks for your reply - and while I’m here, for all your recent work. I moved the .scidvspc folder, as instructed. It reverted Scidvspc to its default setup, as expected, but selecting an ‘extra’ piece set still causes the error. I'd be pleased to send you a copy of .scidvspc but there doesn’t seem to be much point. Thanks again, Steve > On 4 Apr 16, at 10:30pm, Steve A <ste...@gm...> wrote: > > Someone else had this recently. This should fix it. The latest OS X is missing some tcl packages. Find attached the missing package, and install it into ScidvsPC app with something like tar xzf Img1.4.tgz mv Img1.4 /Applications/ScidvsMac.app/Contents/Frameworks/Img1.4 I'll have to make a new release i guess. Thanks so much Steven. Now that my pieces are working again… I like the shape of the Merida 2 set, but the yellow tint clashes with my board colors. Does anyone have a pure white Merida 2 set? Or, are there instructions somewhere on how to create piece sets? I have some beautiful Merida pgn files lying around… Cheers, Steve > On 5 Apr 16, at 5:46pm, Steve A <ste...@gm...> wrote: > > This should fix it. > The latest OS X is missing some tcl packages.
