I'm not super proffecient with Trees and Book .. but how they work is distinct.
Books have a weight, and trees have a frequency and score.
Books are of course much quicker, and most people want to make books
out of databases, not the other way around.

But of course, creating free quality databases and books is a great thing to do.

You can send me a screenshot of Hiarcs Chess Explorer window you
mention if you care to explain it more... though i cant be too
optimistic about changing these well established / defined features.

In subversion, mainline SCID has the option to automatically open
bases, but i cant agree with this feature Steve. It has several bugs
i've noticed, and on occaisons , only makes life harder. So i probably
won't adjust this beyond what it can do now. ... Bases can be opened
from the command line (or by an alias such as -
  alias scid="/usr/bin/scid $PATH/mybase $*"

and it is already possible to open the tree window also by default.
