Run Windows update on any current Windows, look at some of those problems being fixed - particularly those containing "unauthenticated" "remote web page" and "carefully crafted" and you will begin to understand why. The executive summary: Web pages exist that are designed to infiltrate Internet Explorer and cause it to run arbitrary code (ie code supplied by persons unknown) on your computer with your (or worse, elevated) privilege. That, and similar woes in email, provide the ungodly with limitless unauthorised access to people's computers worldwide, and they can then use the computers for various purposes such as sending spam, attacking other's computers. And their access to your private information such as banking details isn't to be sneezed at. Years ago, when I first set up email for my wife, the first email she received was from a friend. It contained a Windows virus. Fortunately for us, Windows viruses don't work well on Linux. -- Santa |
