Hello, my name is Giordano. I am a chess player but also a programmer. I use Scidb to enter and view my opening repertoires. Out of my personal curiosity I'm trying to understand the coding of the signed Chessbase cbh, I'm following a tutorial found on talkchess. I managed to decode the moves of a game but I got stuck on the pawn promotion. Following the tutorial I was unable to understand how to get to the pawn promotion. Since Scidb is able to decode the cbh format, is there anyone kind enough to explain to me how to interpret the pawn promotion? Many thanks in advance and regards, Giordano |

Bogdan, I have scidb r1475. Once I got the r1531 snapshot, scidb-beta compiled and runs well. Someone should update the Downloads page. Hi Joseph, Which compiler are you using? I am able to build scidb r1531 with gcc8 on ubuntu 21.10. You should also not run make in parallel (-j option) as that can sometimes cause problems. I am having difficulty installing scidb on Ubuntu Linux 20.04.4. There is a suggestion in the Discussion forum for removing a certain line from one of the source files. I did that but it had no effect. I'm attaching the messages generated by make install. Thanks for any installation help that you can provide |

Is the mailing list a good place to submit bug reports? I get an error while attempting to open Caissabase (in Scid format - .sg4). The error is "Application error. Error: assertion failed: count <= limit". Is this a known error? I'm working hard trying to install Scidb on FreeBSD12. I'm being assisted with this task by people who know the program (and the OS), but that's not exactly the right platform to get help with Scidb. I subscribed to this mailing list about a week ago, but it's been quiet. So, I'm wondering whether it's still active. If I remember right, the last message on the on the archive was nearly three years ago. Get BlueMail for Android |

I've just released revision 1519: - Layout now includes toolbar layout. - Layout now supports fullscreen mode (try F11). - Some board themes changed a bit, especially contour of some pieces sets has been removed. - Board theme "Elegant" added. Start Scidb with "--update-themes" if you want to use the changed/new themes. For a quick overview of all themes see http://scidb.sf.net/de/themes.html . |

I've just released revision 1512. Based on my tests this is the first stable release since a longer time: - Many, many bugfixes. - User handling of Save/Replace dialog improved, but not yet finished. - Layout management is finished. Next bigger step is the integration of fast opening search algorithm. This will also include the feature of an ECO/Variation dialog. Best, Gregor |

I've released revision 1507. Some bugs have been fixed, and the layout management has been refined: - Adding additional analysis (engine) windows is not affecting the layout, provided that all analysis windows are belonging to same container. - Information about changes of named layouts when closing the application. - Now the layout of database tabs are independent from window height, only the board tab is defining the height of the window, this means that the layout of the board tab is the leading layout. - Improved algorithm in finding places for docked windows. It is quite likely that the application will inform about changed layout(s) after first start of new revision. In this case it is recommended to select action "Overwrite existing layout...". All the best, Gregor |

I've released version 1505. This version is providing an overview of all ECO codes in current game. About the handling: - Double click (left) will set current position of game to end position of this line. - Shift-click (left) will open a mini-board, showing the end posiion of current line. Any mouse click, or leaving the ECO table, will close this mini- board. How to open this pane: use context sensitive menu on any pane header and enable item "Windows->ECO-Table", or enable "Main Menu.->Layout->Windows->ECO- Table". Furthermore this version contains some bugfixes. All the best, Gregor |

I've released version 1498. In this release I did a big improvement in layout management: 1. All Database tabs are configurable, like the Board tab. Even the Games tab is configurable, see (2). On Games tab you may use the context sensitive menu on any table header, or use "Main Menu->Layout". 2. Furthermore the layout now includes the table (list) layouts. This means that restoring the window layout also will restore the table list layout of all tables: Database tab ------------------------------------------------------------ Games: game table (list) Players: player table, game table, event table Events: event table, game table, player table Sites: site table, event table Annotators: annotator table, game table Positions: position table, game table Board tab ------------------------------------------------------------ (Opening) tree table, (tree) game table 3. The improved layout management is differentiating between chess variants: - Normal Chess, also called Standard Chess (including Three Check Chess) - Drop Chess (Crazyhouse) - Antichess (Losers, Suicide/Giveaway). This means that switching the chess variant will switch to the specific layout belonging to this chess variant. 4. The determination of the chess variants is different between Database tab and Board tab, on former tab it is determined by selected database, on latter tab it is determined by selected game (Standard Chess if no game is open). 5. It is possible to link a named layout of any Database tab (Games, Player, ...) to a named layout of the Board tab. In this case loading this specific layout on Board tab will automatically load the associated layout (with a link to this Board layout) on this Database tab. 6. Some deficiencies of layout computation has been fixed. The use of the improved layout management requires to overwrite the old layout files, because the old layout file are not containing the table (list) layouts: - Load the wanted layout (Board tab) - Select "Save Layout as ..." (context sensitive menu, or main menu), or use "Save Layout" and save with same name. Open questions: a) Probably the layout management should also differentiate between Standard Chess and Three Check Chess. b) The Board layout should also contain the options of: 1. Game editor, and/or 2. Analysis pane, and/or 3. Some important board options, like "Show Material Values" Comments are welcome! In case of bugs please report to https://sourceforge.net/p/scidb/bugs/. All the best, Gregor |

Hi, If the position includes castling rights even though there are no rooks on the table and the user says yes to the dialogue, then attempting to start a chess engine crashes the engine. To reproduce try this fen string ""4k3/8/4K1P1/2b3B1/8/8/8/8 w KQkq - 0 1". Best, Bogdan |

In revision I've implemented feature request #80: optionally increase all font sizes. This is very useful for visually impaired people, and for many elder people. Now this is implemented in revision 1485. Use Control-plus/minus for increasing/decreasing all fonts. Starting scidb- beta with option "--reset.fonts" will reset all font sizes to default values. Hi Gregor, Just wanted to mention that cdb2sci worked perfectly on my Mega Database 2014. I have been adding games to this database from various sources until it reached 6.5M games, and it was successfully converted (well, 47 corrupted games but that's ok). Thanks a lot for your work.
