&lt;p&gt;It is called an engine because it does not come with an &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphical_user_interface" rel="nofollow"&gt;interface&lt;/a&gt;. SCID interfaces with the engine through the &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Chess_Interface" rel="nofollow"&gt;Universal Communication Interface protocol&lt;/a&gt;, better known through its acronym, UCI.
