Hi,there are two protocols to communicate with chess engines that scid can use.The most common one is the "UCI" protocol and is the default when you add e new engine.Crafty however use the older "winboard" protocol:http://chessprogramming.wikispaces.com/Chess+Engine+Communication+Protocol
To tell scid to use the "winboard" protocol open the "Analysis Engine List", select crafty and press the edit button then deselect the "UCI" option (on the left of the "configure UCI engine" button).
