Hello, I have observed the following rating type changes happen for me upon opening a database: BlackElo -> BlackElo BlackRating -> BlackRapid BlackRapid -> BlackUSCF BlackICCF -> BlackECF BlackUSCF -> BlackElo BlackDWZ -> BlackRapid BlackECF -> BlackUSCF It is not guaranteed that this is caused during the opening of the DB, it's just that I can only conveniently check the rating type of games while the DB is open The same bug occurs for me if I quit scid and open the DB after starting scid again instead of steps 3 and 4 though I only tested that for some of the ratings steps to reproduce: 1. create new database 2. save a new game with a black rating and the rating type BlackRating 3. close the database (Toolbar -> Database -> close) 4. reopen the database (Toolbar -> File -> the DB name (one of the recently opened DBs)) 5. look at the game in the pgn window (leftclick the top of the window if it doesn't show raw pgn) expected: the rating type is still BlackRating occurred: the rating type is now BlackRapid Scid was compiled from master 4370a3532d9cd67729be03e9575dbcde741afa4a OS: Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS (wayland) motherboard: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. I've recently been using the opening trainer (Play -> Training -> Openings). I have taken the following steps: - Created 2 new databases: one filled with my games as White and the other as Black. - For each DB, marked all the games as "Openings for White" and "Openings for Black" respectively. - Changed the icon/type to be Openings for White/Black. The feature has proved to be very useful for reviewing my repertoire and I would highly recommend it. Now there are a couple of things I haven't figured out yet. 1. Is there a way to limit the depth (number of moves) of the training? 2. Once in a training session, there's no way to try out other lines save "abort"ing the session. I am getting this bizarre error while looking at a game in SCID. To reproduce this error, load the attached game in SCID. Follow the main line through White's 20th move (20. Rdf1), then instead of playing Black's mainline move, do the moves 20. ... Nxh3 21.f6 and begin moving the mouse around the notation window, and this error will pop up twice. This is using SCID version 4.7.4 on Ubuntu Linux 24.04. I have never seen this type of behavior in SCID before. What does it mean? |

Thanks Gerhard for your thoughts. It does make sense. However from *a* user's, i.e. me, perspective I'd like to assume that key combos which pertain to Board and Notation are always passed down to those windows irrespective of the active window, unless I'm working with a modal window or a pop-up menu. Perhaps one thing that confused me in the beginning was the fact that simply clicking in the Notation window doesn't give it the focus. Rather I've got to the right-click left-click drill to transfer focus. Nothing pressing TBH. Mostly an annoyance I can live with. Hello, this is not a bug but something to define. Different parts of the SCID UI can have the focus and decide how to handle key entries. For example the arrows have different semantics in a game list window compared to a notation or board window. The interesting question is when should the focus change. In my program RChess the focus now changes when the user just moves the mouse from one part to the other. In SCID you need to click to chance the focus. Often times, I notice that navigation (and move entry) using keyboard doesn't work. In particular, that happens every time I click on the board or any other window than Notation. The workaround I have discovered is to right-click on an empty area of Notation and then left click (on Notation). Has anyone else run into this? Have I misconfigured anything? I thought I'd share this as I struggled quite a bit with it before I figured it out. When you run an engine via "Tools" -> "Start Engine 1 or 2", by default, the depth is set to infinity. Given how configurable Scid is and the breadth of its feature set, I suppose there's no particular setup/layout that works for everyone. I always wonder how others are using Scid and if there's anything I can learn from them. Since 2017, my favourite has been Chess PGN Master (http://pgnmaster.kalab.com/) [1] : Though not as powerful and rich as Scid on desktop, it's got a stable and easy to use UI with a very reasonable feature set. I hear "DroidFish" is the preferred chess interface that automatically updates from the latest version of stockfish. It beats all of the other chess apps and is truly amazing. But they say that the sites have been hacked and there's some sort of Trojan Horse or untrusted certificates when it comes to downloading previous versions. In such cases, I simply right click on an empty area in the Notation window which makes a menu pop up.
