The Perl Data Language, another sourceforge project, is an open source alternative to IDL. It's a bit tough to install because of dependencies on PGPLOT, OpenGL, etc. It would be nice to include that in scibuntu.
Similarly, IRAF is a free astronomy suite that's not easy to install.
