I am a teacher in a small private school in Australia. We use ACE curriculum and teach phonics to our students. Recently, changes in national curriculum in Australia are requiring all schools to teach phonics. Quite simply, it is sounding out the sound of the letter in the word, not the alphabet sound. It is best to introduce children to the short sound of the letter first instead of the long sound. Therefore, if you wanted to change to a more phonics based approach, you could re-record the individual letter sounds to short sounds and any letters that form a part of a word, i.e. 's c o o t e r' to be the actual sound that each letter makes in that word.
