Hi everyone, Thanks for schemaspy, great tool! I wonder if I can ask for the descriptive statistics of the columns automatically together with the regular output. I saw there is an sql query override possible, but I really would like to add more things on the output. Any ideas? take care, Carlos. -- Carlos Denner dos Santos, PhD |

I have tried to apply SchemaSpy to to an existing database here. My
attempts failed despite reading the SchemaSpy web page and following
recommended syntax. Using the required options for postgres the results are
an uninformative generic use response; e.g.,
$ java -jar schemaSpy_5.0.0.jar -t pgsql -db jerrittmine -h localhost -u
rshepard -o development
SchemaSpy generates an HTML representation of a database schema's
relationships.
Usage:
java -jar schemaSpy_5.0.0.jar [options]
-t databaseType type of database - defaults to ora
use -dbhelp for a list of built-in types
-u user connect to the database with this user id
-s schema defaults to the specified user
-p password defaults to no password
-o outputDirectory directory to place the generated output in
-dp pathToDrivers optional - looks for JDBC drivers here before
looking in driverPath in [databaseType].properties.
Go to http://schemaspy.sourceforge.net for a complete list/description
of additional parameters.
Sample usage using the default database type (implied -t ora):
java -jar schemaSpy.jar -db mydb -s myschema -u devuser -p password -o
output
On my Slackware-14.1 system JDBC is located in /usr/lib/jdbc-3.0 so I did
not add it to the command line.
Can you suggest how I can make it work here?
Rich

I'm trying to use Oracle thin driver and keep getting errors because schemaSpy tries to create SID instead of the service_name. The property 'connectionSpec' in the properties file seems to be ignored. Has anyone seen this issue? java -jar "C:\schemaSpy.jar" -dp "C:\ojdbc6.jar" -t orathin -u userAbc -p secretpwd-o "C:\outputFolderAbc" connectionSpec=jdbc:oracle:thin:@//myhost1:1521/serviceAbc -host myhost1 -port 1521 I also tried replacing -t orathin with -t orathin_serviceAbc, as suggested in some blogs... but nothing helps. Failed to connect to database URL [jdbc:oracle:thin:@myhost1 :1521:serviceAbc] java.sql.SQLException: Listener refused the connection with the following error: ORA-12505, TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor at oracle.jdbc.driver.T4CConnection.logon(T4CConnection.java:419) at oracle.jdbc.driver.PhysicalConnection.<init>(PhysicalConnection.java:536) at oracle.jdbc.driver.T4CConnection.<init>(T4CConnection.java:228) at oracle.jdbc.driver.T4CDriverExtension.getConnection(T4CDriverExtension.java:32) at oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver.connect(OracleDriver.java:521) at net.sourceforge.schemaspy.SchemaAnalyzer.getConnection(SchemaAnalyzer.java:582) at net.sourceforge.schemaspy.SchemaAnalyzer.analyze(SchemaAnalyzer.java:157) Any help is appreciated. This seems like a popular DB modeling tool, but I'm surprised that it does not work for a simple use case (oracle thin driver with service_name).. ~ thanks, Karthik Karuppannan. |

I tried using schemaSpy_5.0.0.jar against MS SQL Server 2005 and got into trouble after running for 10 minutes.
I used sqljdbc4.jar and got the following:

Can you suggest a workaround or as I suspect, SchemaSpy is not supported any longer and we need to find another DB schema visualizer ?

Hello, I've been using SchemaSpy with pleasure for years with various databases, but right now I can't connect to a locally hosted PostgreSQL database: $ java -jar /opt/schema\ spy/schemaSpy_5.0.0.jar -t pgsql -db mydb -u postgres -o ~/sspy -host localhost -port 5433 -dp /usr/share/java/postgresql.jar Using database properties: [/opt/schema spy/schemaSpy_5.0.0.jar]/net/sourceforge/schemaspy/dbTypes/pgsql.properties Failed to connect to database URL [jdbc:postgresql://localhost/mydb] org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: Connection refused. Check that the hostname and port are correct and that the postmaster is accepting TCP/IP connections. at org.postgresql.core.v3.ConnectionFactoryImpl.openConnectionImpl(ConnectionFactoryImpl.java:136) at org.postgresql.core.ConnectionFactory.openConnection(ConnectionFactory.java:66) ...(snip)... It appears to make no sense since it is very easy to check that something is, in fact, listening on the specified port using telnet: tnalfir@tasha:~$ telnet localhost 5433 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. I can connect to the database in question using SQL Workbench, which uses the same JDBC driver I use with SchemaSpy, so I know that it is PostgreSQL that is listening on the port and that the the JDBC driver isn't to blame. The only thing that's non-standard is the port (5433 instead of 5432), but I specify it explicitly so I assumed it would not be a problem. Any ideas what the problem might be? Thanks. Cheers, Tomislav |

Hi, I've been having some problems using schemaSpy with firebird, and after some research I've found them to be caused by this bug: http://tracker.firebirdsql.org/browse/JDBC-130 I enclose three patches that would help firebird users, and that shouldn't hurt for other database users (though I haven't tested). Feel free to incorporate then to schemaspy's source, if you wish. Cheers, Pablo León HORUS |

JDBC doesn't know anything about roles and therefore doesn't provide any APIs to
query or set them. To provide that support SchemaSpy would require a mechanism
to specify arbitrary SQL to be executed after the connection is established. It
should be possible to implement something like that, but it would require a bit
of thought and work.

Subject: [Schemaspy-users] How can I set an Oracle Role?
I am merely a user in an Oracle database. I am not the schema owner and do not
have the schema password. By default my userid does not have read access to the
schema I want to analyze with SchemaSpy. However, I do have a non-default role
gives me read access to the schema.
In SQL, I do the following:
sqlplus <userid>/<pwd>@<instance>
>set role ILX_DQSA_ADMIN;
After the set role is executed, I can see the tables in the schema.
When I run SchemaSpy, I get this message:
No tables or views were found in schema 'ILX37_GLOBAL'.

I am merely a user in an Oracle database. I am not the schema owner and
do not have the schema password. By default my userid does not have read
access to the schema I want to analyze with SchemaSpy. However, I do
have a non-default role gives me read access to the schema.
In SQL, I do the following:
sqlplus <userid>/<pwd>@<instance>
>set role ILX_DQSA_ADMIN;
After the set role is executed, I can see the tables in the schema.
When I run SchemaSpy, I get this message:
No tables or views were found in schema 'ILX37_GLOBAL'.
The schema exists in the database, but the user you specified
(<userid>)
might not have rights to read its contents.
Is there a way to tell SchemaSpy to set the required role after it
connects but before it tries to gather the schema details?

Do you have more of the stack trace from the failure? It should give us some
more clues.

Subject: [Schemaspy-users] Can't connect to MSSQL Express 2005
Hi,
I'm having problems connecting to a MS SQL Express database.
I can get schemaspy to connect to a PostGRESQL database just fine.
I can get Microsoft's SQL Server Management Studio Express to connct to this
MSSQL data base,
but I can't get schemaspy to connect to the MSSQL 2005 Express database.
I have tried many combination of commands and drivers, (MS's sqljdbc4.jar, and
jtds-1.2.5.jar) with no luck.
I have set the ports to use 1433 - although I have had no trouble connecting
with Management Studio.
I have been trying variations of:
java -jar schemaSpy.jar -t mssql05 -db <dbname> -host <hostname> -port 1433 -u
<username> -p <password> -o schemaspy.res -dp sqljdbc4.jar
and similar incantations with jtds-1.2.5.jar.
I keep getting Failed to connect to database URL
[jdbc:sqlserver:/<hostname>:1433;databseName=<dbname>]
Okay, it has to be something that I'm not doing, or not doing correctly, but
darn if I can see it.
Help?

The default database engine in MySQL is MyISAM. It does not support foreign key relationships and, as a result, SchemaSpy won't be able to determine the relationships. InnoDB is another MySQL database engine that fully supports foreign key relationships. John ________________________________ From: Heinrich Stoellinger <hc....@ao...> To: sch...@li... I just wanted to let everyone know that I finally got off of my butt and put out an official release. The details are in the release notes (http://schemaspy.sourceforge.net/releaseNotes.html). Thanks for your support, John |

Can you try the latest beta version and try using the JTDS driver? James Eggers had a similar problem and resolved it using that driver.
