I updated the description (http://www.sbcl.org/gsoc2013/ideas/#sec-3.4) with a transcript from #sbcl on irc.freenode.net. I believe Nikodemus Siivola is the person who's worked the most on improving compilation speed in the past couple years. Basically, the way we see things is that we want to either disable the constraint propagation (flow-sensitive type analysis) pass, or at least make it a lot less precise. Then, we'll see what transforms break, and either fix them or disable them conditionally. Note that I don't expect SBCL's compiler to ever reach the responsiveness of current JIT compilers. At best it will be a pretty quick compiler that's available at runtime, but still fairly heavy. http://pvk.ca/Blog/2013/04/13/starting-to-hack-on-sbcl/ may provide some useful pointers. Paul Khuong |
