Documentation on the Mach bits of OS X can be hard to find. Here's a bunch: http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/xnu/xnu-1504.9.26/osfmk/man/ (After selecting the page to view, click the "plain text" link to make it readable.) However, many of those are quite terse, and don't always make clear when eg. reference counts are incremented. For stuff that exists in most incarnations of Mach it is also worth checking the gnumach manual, which sometimes makes these issues clearer: http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/gnumach-doc/index.html#Top If anyone knows of other Mach documents worth looking at, please do speak up.
