First, I'd like to congratulate the developpers for this helpful utility.
However I've some troubles with the "remote directory" option: I enter an URL but everytime I test this remote dir, I obtain the message that this dir is not writtable (using either SSH or FTP).
But actually, the URL is correct: when I copy/paste this line into Nautilus for example, I can open the remote dir with all the permissions (rwx).
Have you noticed similar problems ?

Could you please run "sudo simple-backup-config" from the command line and then see if there is any console output when you are testing the remote dir?
Which version of SBackup are you using and on which distribution?

I have found that the test never works for remote backups. So I just skipped the test and let it run its course, but it just backed up to the default dir, the config file doesn't seem to change when I change the target.
On 0.9-1

I get the same symptoms... i think my problem is related to security settings. I had been using this program to backup my laptop successfully to a samba share on a Xandros desktop over a wireless network. However, i recently installed ubuntu on the desktop, and in so doing set up samba a little differently this time. the security is set to "user" rather than "share" on the samba server, and so it requires a user and passwd to access the shared directory. is there a way to use simple-backup-config when a password is required to access the share?

You are correct, version 0.10 works over my samba share with security = user. Thank you very much for creating and continuing to support and develop such a useful tool!

Nothing happens in my console (even when I have the error message)
Distribution : Ubuntu Breezy
sbackup version: 0.9-1 (from the breezy backports)

As a security measure, thet target does not change, unless the test is successful. Is the bug still there, can we try to find the cause of it?

If it can be put into a url that gnomevfs can understand, then SBackup should work too.
Try with 0.10 version.
