I have asked Mike off list what this particular problem might be,
and it stumped him.
I've since resolved it.
Cause: OS re-install, data left intact.
Sun java 1.3, installed to f:\jdk, but sun
(following M$ bad practices) dumps a load of stuff
in c:\program files.
Since I still had all the jdk installed I presumed
(wrongly) that java would work, indeed it appeared to,
in that once on my PATH, I could call up java quite happily.
This results in Saxon failing badly with a host of
saxon initialisation errors talking about security violations.
xep also fails, saying it can't parse the fonts.xml file,
yet the parser is in the classpath.
All resolved with a re-install of sun jdk.
Just in case anyone see's this problem and is as puzzled as I was.
Sun have just gone down in my estimation.
