Yep. That was it. Modified the code and issue resolved.
I too cannot work out how I got the XQST0093 originally. I guess I changed a few things around and then ran into the null pointer and now I cannot remember what I did (bad programmer!).
I realised it must have to do with my resolver because when I created the sample code for your perusal I quickly tried the input files using the Saxon CLI and it worked ok. I apologise for not pointing that out when I sent the java, but I guess it didn't take you long to spot the problem.
