I'm aware of the difficulties caused by this decision. I decided to take
the risk that JDK 1.4 would become stable and widely used by the time
people wanted to use Saxon 7.x for serious production use. I'll review
the status in a couple of months, if it's still causing problems then I
might (a) try to separate the regexp functionality into a separate Saxon
package, so the rest of the product can still be used with JDK 1.2,
and/or (b) provide an implementation that works with an alternative
regexp library. For the moment, I just wanted to get the functionality
out in a way that allowed people to play with it.
Who knows, perhaps Sun will even release their regexp classes in a way
that can be used with earlier JDK's!

I would like to do an XSLT 2.0 version of the book, but I haven't
started on it yet, and I will wait until the specs are completely
stable, and ideally until more implementations start to appear.
