Unwanted whitespace in the output can come from three sources: it can be
copied from the source document, copied from the stylesheet, or added by
the serializer when using indent="yes" (which is the default for HTML).
Try using <xsl:output indent="no">.
This shouldn't affect the way the HTML is rendered by a browser. It
makes the HTML source more difficult to read, but it can make the output
file significantly smaller.
