Thanks for the reply.
There were two problems, both coming from the fact that I am controlling liquidsoap with Java via the socket interface.

1. I did not read the standard error and output streams, so I guess the buffer got full or something and then everything stopped / hanged.
2. I had log4j setup with a default roll over strategy of 100 files. Increasing it to 1000 seems to fix the problem. (or maybe it's delaying the problem, will have to wait and see).

Do you mean that the song never finishes _from the viewpoint of the
shoutcast output_? In other words, tracks are merged together. This
could be the result of an abusive transition, or perhaps a known bug
with crossfading in the latest release
