[Savant-discuss] Problems with LinkSys routers

Several Savant users have emailed me or filed support requests in the past
year about problems with LinkSys routers.

Problems range anywhere from occasionally dropped connections to the
inability of people outside of the local network to view pages on the
server.  These problems seem to affect all web servers equally - i.e., the
problems are not specific to Savant.

I have recently been able to duplicate and verify these problems on
several members of the LinkSys EtherFast cable/DSL router family,
including BEFSR11, BEFSR41, and BEFSR81.  Based on these results, I'm
concluding that all LinkSys EtherFast routers are faulty as-shipped from
the factory.

While I would suggest that anyone considering a router purchase avoid the
LinkSys EtherFast family, I don't have much cash to burn myself and
understand that they're usually the cheapest commonly available.

If you already own or are planning to purchase a LinkSys EtherFast router,
it may be possible to resolve your problems with a free firmware upgrade
available from the LinkSys website at:
	http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp

Note that a firmware upgrade will wipe all of your router settings,
requiring you to re-configure your router from scratch.

Please note that I don't have continual access to these routers, so I am
unable to provide support for problems with LinkSys routers.
