(This ticket differs and is totally independent of the ranking & rating system suggested elsewhere. These two systems should not have any relation whatsoever.)
Each game that is played the player is awarded x XP-points. Each game he wins, no matter if it was ranked or unranked, gives y points. If a game is abandoned and never continued or resolved somehow it gives z XP.
A players XP should accumulate with time, allowing the player to automatically "level up". All players start at lvl 1. The higher the level, the more games you need to play/win to get to the next.
Each level has a huge picture associated with it and a title.
All this is visible in the players profile: Other players can see wht level the player is, how many games she played, an XP-meter showing how much xp she has and how uch is left to next level, and the associated avatar for the players current level.
While this functionality actually doesnt bring much real functioinality in terms of gameplay, it is very important to have it around since people love "colelcting" things and "advance" their social status. Stuff like this will make many persons play the game more, leading to a more vibrant community in the end. This, the only meanin is to socially stimulate number of games being played.
WotC, and many others, are doing this to stimulate participation. Here's their own version: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/PlaneswalkerPoints
