[Samtools-help] BCFtools caller - consensus vs multiallelic?

Hello,
   I am wondering about the difference between multiallelic-caller and consensus-caller. The documentation states multiallelic-caller overcomes some limitations in the consensus caller, but what exactly are these limitations? 
   More specifically, if one is working with human genomes/exomes looking for rare disease-associated variants, which caller is better?
