Hi John, I'm sorry, but I can't see any problem myself. I have just done fresh installations of both 64bit and 32bit salix systems under virtualbox 7. On both systems installing povray and running povray --benchmark works fine. I even tried it before and after installing the virtualbox guest additions. There were no problems in any case. I'm not sure why you had the problems you had. It certainly isn't something to do with gslapt. The only thing I can think of is that your CPU (or maybe the virtual CPU configuration in your virtualbox) does not support some CPU instruction which the povray binary has been compiled with. This would fit with the "Illegal instruction" message you had. What does the following command output from within your VM? grep flags /proc/cpuinfo | head -n1 If that is the case, I'm sure that if you recompiled the povray package inside your virtualbox, it would work. You can use the respective slackbuild for that: https://slackbuilds.org/repository/15.0/graphics/povray/ You can also do that if you just replace the line in your /etc/slapt-get/slapt-srcrc that reads "sbo" with SOURCE=https://slackbuilds.org/slackbuilds/15.0/ and run sudo slapt-src --update sudo slapt-src -i povray Regards, George On Sun, Oct 13, 2024 at 6:55 PM John Coppens <jo...@jc...> wrote: > On Sat, 12 Oct 2024 15:08:25 +0300 > George Vlahavas <vla...@gm...> wrote: > > > I just tried installing povray on my system and it seems to work > > fine. Hi John, I just tried installing povray on my system and it seems to work fine. I even rendered an example file with no problems. Is the VM where the problem appeared a 32bit one or a 64bit one? The configuration files are not an issue. They are there with a .new extension, so you could just run: sudo cp /etc/povray/3.8/povray.conf.new /etc/povray/3.8/povray.conf But it shouldn't matter anyway, it runs with default configuration even if nothing is there. Hi John, Honestly, I wouldn't know. I don't know much about gnuradio. All I know is that the gnuradio developers have the qt dependency marked as optional and gnuradio is happy to compile without it. If there is an argument to be made for the qt dependency to be mandatory, because the functionality it provides is so important that it doesn't make sense otherwise, it should probably be made with the gnuradio developers. Hi all, Yesterday, the VM app I had prepared seemed to lack the povray program seemed to have been forgotten (entirely my fault). After downloading/installing using the gslapt manager, trying to run povray produced 'Illegal instruction' - nothing else. (I believe this error message appeared to me years ago, when accidently trying to run a 32-bit app on a 64-bit OS) I just tried to replicate the problem at home, using the same VM app. Here, povray runs well - the only difference I can imagine being that my povray was downloaded a couple of weeks ago, while the student's was 2 days ago. I also tried to download the POV-source and compiled it on their machines, and had the same result. Though the gslapt manager does not show it, I believe that installing povray pulls in at least one dependency (SDL2?), which could have something to do with it. My apologies if I skipped obvious tricks, as I commented before, I'm not too familiar with Salix procedures. If it matters, the students' VirtualBox was version 7.1. Here, I still have 6.1 installed. John (Note: installing povray here did succeed, but it seems that the install forgets to copy the pov's configuration file to places where povray look when starting: povray: cannot open the system configuration file /etc/povray/3.8/povray.conf: No such file or directory. povray: cannot open the user configuration file /home/usr/.povray/3.8/povray.conf: No such file or directory. ). |

Already grateful for your work - very much appreciated! The thing about the optional Qt is, it doesn't make much sense to have Gnuradio-companion without it. The missing Instrumentation includes most, if not all measurement apparatus, including scopes, spectrum analyzers etc. Also lacking, without Qt, are the GUI widgets which control parameters in 'real-time'. All this severely limits GRC's use as an educational tool... Particularly as the wxWidgets alternative is quite widely advertised as deprecated. Again, thanks! John |

If qt is installed, it will build the components you were looking for. If it isn't, it simply won't and gnuradio will not have that functionality. Our packages in the extra repository were not built with that option. I am now building packages that include the optional dependency on qt. These include the "Instrumentation" option. They are also for a newer version of gnuradio. I will upload them to the repos soon. You will just be able to upgrade to them using the package manager. Regards, George |

Yes, I am at the same stage. In my hurry, I forgot to mention this. The issue
is that in the right column (where the blocks are listed), 'Instrumentation'
is missing. This should contain essentials such as oscilloscopes and such.
It should list
...
> Impairment Models
> Instrumentation
> QT
> QT GUI Bercurve...
...
A bit higher, just below Fourier analysis, a 'block' > GUI Widgets should
appear (again with a sub category 'QT')
Possibly, a package QtQui is missing in the distribution.
(at least I can't find it with gslapt). I tried some of similar-looking
Qt packages, but no luck)

Hi John, no, it's just that not all dependencies of some packages on our extra repo are listed. You can read more about the reasons why here: https://blog.salixos.org/post/our-new-extra-repository/ I'm adding Rich's reply here, which he accidentally only sent to me, I expect he wanted to send it to the list instead. Though all other packages I installed previously using gslapt did load any dependencies, 'gnuradio' does not seem to define any dependency at all. It installs just fine. But, on starting gnuradio-companion, the first thing was a complaint about not having Mako. After installing Mako, another complaint popped up. Mind, the above was using a -pristine- Salix 'Full' install on a separate (new) VirtualBox application. Am I doing something wrong here? John |

Hello all. I installed Salix (first time - I'm originally a Slackware user) on a Virtual Machine (Virtualbox), and was really impressed with the easy of installation, and completeness! That was, till I wanted to impress my students, and I wanted to install Gnuradio-companion. The install went well... But running it, it seems that some modules are missing. In particular, the 'Instrumentation' is missing (this normally has a sub-item 'QTGUI' - also missing). After quite a bit of searching, it seems that some dependencies were not present... qwt and some other. But installing them did not solve the problem. I have some confusion about the two -slightly different dated- qt5 packages that are in the package manager. Anyway I'd appreciate suggestions how to go forward... and somewhat pressed by my audience! John |

Thanks for the announcement of Salix Xfce 15.0. I pulled it down, and built a new VM on QEMU on Ubuntu 20.04, choosing a ReiserFS, and had no problems during the installation, or subsequent package updates and installations. I can ssh to the VM. However, I cannot login on the GUI console: when I move the mouse into it from my desktop, and then click once to get its attention, the cursor changes shape to a larger black arrowhead, but then will not move at all, so typing into the login box is impossible. I can escape from the GUI with Ctl-Alt. Has anyone reported similar problems? Just in case it was a memory issue, I reconfigured the VM to have 4GB DRAM, instead of its initial 2GB when I first installed it. That had no effect. I can try installing a different desktop than Xfce, but won't spend time on it just yet, in case you have already found and solved the problem. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Nelson H. Hi all! I have made major updates to the netsetup tool (part of salixtools). There are now a lot of new strings to translate. Please visit the transifex page for contributing your translations: https://www.transifex.com/gapan/salixtools/dashboard Also, a reminder that some translations are also needed in salixtools-gtk: https://www.transifex.com/gapan/salixtools-gtk/dashboard/ and dotnew: https://www.transifex.com/gapan/dotnew/dashboard/ Thank you! Hi all! I have made several updates to salixtools-gtk. There are a few new strings that need translation. Most of those are due to changes in GTK+3 and the deprecation of stock items (so now common stock strings like "OK", "Cancel" etc are not translated by GTK+3 by default). So, if you could head over at https://www.transifex.com/gapan/salixtools-gtk/content/ and update your translations it would be much appreciated. Thanks! George |

Hello, mirror.freedif have changed location and is now in Singapore, with a 1 GBPS connection, including RSYNC. The hardware has also been refreshed for greater performance and reliability. Would you be able to update your mirror list to update the entry of Freedif? https://mirror.freedif.org/Salix/ Thank you Kari -- Sent with Tutanota |
