    Hi silent-robot,

since yesterday I tested around with the new release and got some findings I want to share. First of all, please keep up the great work, I really like the idea of an Arch-based gaming / multimedia OS. As my sun is coming to an age where he is not satisfied with a gaming console anymore, I would like to use this distro for his gaming rig at some point. (You got to educate your kids to use linux instead of windows, don´t you? :) )

    Hardware:
I am testing this on a somewhat old Dell Latitude E6430 with a NVIDIA NVS 5200M / Integrated Intel GPU with 8GB RAM and a Samsung EVO 850 with 512GB. (Just an old nb I use to test stuff)

    1. Test:

I installed the xfce-Version alongside my existing Manjaro 19.01 installation. It did install fine, but I couldn´t get into XFCE (it stopped after Account Service). I tried this with the latest NVIDIA drivers as well as without any nvidia drivers. Might be a problem on my side, but maybe not.

After that I tried to boot into my manjaro again, but it wouldn´t let me (sorry, it was late last night and I don´t remember the error anymore, but some grub/partition issue)

    2. Test:
As my manjaro didn´t work anymore (no problem here, it´s just a test notebook) I tried to do an install with erasing the disk. I tried this with the XFCE and the Plasma version. Both end up with "Invalid partition table" after rebooting.

I tried to install another distro after that, just to be sure it´s not hardware related, but LinuxMint as well as Ubuntu did work, so I guess it´s some installer issue.

    3. Test:
I tried to install the nvidia drivers (1. option), the CUDA toolkit as well as the VirtualBox kernal additons and got a "Boost python error in job 'packages' in line 560 of the ..../packages/main.py" (I can redo that and provide you with a screenshot of the error message if this helps)

I tried it another time, just with the VirtualBox kernal additions and got the same error. Then I installed again, just using the nvidia drivers (1st option) and no error. I guess it´s related to the VirtualBox stuff. But it might be my old hardware / an issue on my side. Anyway, I thought I share this.

    Conclusion:
I am unable to get the current release running at this stage. Maybe if I try doing the partition stuff manual it might work. I might try this later this week and will provide you with more feedback then.

Again, thanks for your hard work and this sweet distro.

    Regards,

    asah

Just a short update. I just downloaded the latest manjaro installers to reinstall it on the same hardware. The cinnemon as well as the kde edition, both result in an invalid partition table as well. So maybe it´s a problem on my side ... LinuxMint on the other side installs without any issues ...

Update: pop!OS also results in Invalid partition table, LinuxMint still does the job ...

Another update: The issue was that the partition flag "boot" was missing. For some reason the BIOS decided to switch back (or never saved) the UEFI setting.

    So everything is fine ;)

Anyway, booting works fine and I could also check if the CUDA + NVIDIA gives an error and the answer is: no.

So you (or at least me) just get an error if you choose the VBox kernel additions. But as mentioned, maybe this is an issue on my side.

Thanks again for your great work.

    Regards,

    asah

I have updated the ISOs now so you should not get the VirtualBox error any more.

If you are booting in UEFI mode, you MUST have a GPT partition structure for your disk, which you can do in gparted, and a fat32 boot partition (512mb), otherwise Calamares can fail since it cannot determine the previous partition structure.

However, if you are legacy booting, then you need a partition structure of msdos, which you also do in gparted by creating a new partition table (be warned, this WILL destroy all data on the drive!).

My advice woul dbe to check first in gparted if you have a fat32 boot partition, if you do then it is likely you have a GPT partition table. If not then you probably have an msdos partition table.

With regard to the VirtualBox install, it is now a one-click afair. All the required modules are installed for you. I'm a little puzzled that you are getting this error at all. Can you provide any further information?

        Hopefully that helps.

          Hey mate,

as I said before, it might be related to my hardware / old bios. I checked for a BIOS update as I am not able to boot from HDD in UEFI Mode (only USB Stick is possible), but unfortunatly the BIOS Update is only possible with a windows tool .... and I wont install windows for that as itś just an old notebook I got for testing out distros and other stuff. Currently I run manjaro on it and when I check gparted I only see 1 partition with ext4 and the bootflag. Installing VM addition from the repo works without issues (didn check a VM yet).

Just to be clear, I dont post this issues because I ultimativly need salient os to run on it, the hardware is too old for games anyway, it's more that I like the idea behind salient os and try to help as good as I can to make it better ;)

So if you think it's just related to not having UEFI / old Bios / wrong partitioning and it's not worth looking for the issue as the whole world uses UEFI these days, I am fine with it. The OS works fine even on this old hardware if you don't try to install VM additions.

so please don fokus on this issue if it's not something with impact to other users, I only try to support with what I am able to ;)

          Regards,

          asah
