Eric,
Thanks for your email. You are probably correct with the patch you have
submitted, but would you be able to send the output of:
lvs
vgs
pvs
over, so I can see the structure of your volume naming.
Regards
Frank

Hi,
I'm getting an error that the removal of the snapshot volume cannot be accomplished.
root@poemas51:/etc/cron.daily# safekeep --server --cleanup poem11_1
warn: lvremove called for non-existent device: /dev/mapper/poem11-vg--root_snap_safekeep--10595--MEO0Ec--rbind
When I do a list of the client I see:
era@poem11:~$ ls -l /dev/mapper/
total 0
crw------- 1 root root 10, 236 Feb 6 20:32 control
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Feb 7 22:52 poem11--vg-root -> ../dm-0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Feb 6 20:32 poem11--vg-swap_1 -> ../dm-1
Note the extra '-' between the machine name and the 'vg' designator.
These volumes were set up with default LVM install in Ubuntu 12.04.3.
After making a small change to line 884 of /usr/bin/safekeep (latest
release)
from:
lvmdev = '/dev/mapper/%s-%s' % (group, volume.replace('-', '--'))
to:
lvmdev = '/dev/mapper/%s-%s' % (group.replace('-', '--'), volume.replace('-', '--'))
it works.
Hope this helps someone. I don't think my configuration is that mixed up so perhaps this change should be integrated into the release? I'll let experts decide.
Best regards,
Eric

Hi Frank, That sounds like a plan. I'd have to give it a bit of thought. Dimi, I'm going to do a couple of bits of work on Safekeep over the Christmas period. Nothing dramatic, but some things I think will help. They are: - add an "auto" option, similar to enabled, except it controls if a client is included in run of all clients, or only if explicitly specified. I'm not sure if it should be part of the enabled option, or a separate one. - rework the reporting output to rely on format strings rather than the messy of different functions I originally used. - rework the snapshot handling (again) since I'm still getting too many errors. - maybe look again at what we pass as initial parameters to clients, i.e. converting the XML back to a string. Is there anything else that I should look at? Regards Frank |

Thank you so much for your help! I ran the debug command and found that it was a permissions issue (the folder I was trying to put the backups in was not writable by the user safekeep). Karl, The issue is really why rdiff-backup is failing. Is this an old backup with lots of incrementals or a fairly new one. I have had this sort of problem before, and it takes a bit of effort to clean up rdiff-backup, and it depends on the actual error. Either way, please run safekeep -v --server to get the error from rdiff-backup printed, and if that is not clear, try safekeep -v -v -v --server for the debug output. Folks, Fedora has proposed to make Python 3 the default version of Python in Fedora 21 with the plan to deprecate Python 2 in future version. Now, ignoring issues with rdiff-backup has anyone looked at this for Safekeep. Fairly obviously, we will need to support Python 2 for a long time, as RHEL will not be migrating for a long time yet. Comments welcome. Regards Frank |

Folks, For any of you using Fedora or Redhat EPEL safekeep RPMs, you will notice new RPMs coming out in the next few weeks. These don't have any update to the basic distribution, but rather are just an update to the spec file to include a requirement on crontabs. Regards Frank |

I'm still running 1.3, but I reviewed the release notes and did not see
this change in 1.4
Problem: safekeep is using SMTP Port 25 by default which can be blocked
by many ISP's.
Solution:
What is needed is to add an optional email.smtpport to the safekeep.conf
file
and in the send_notification pass the port to smtplib.SMTP call.
Basically the following (untested)
Add:
if 'smtpport' in email:
email_smtp = email['smtpport']
else:
email_smtp = 25
Modify:
server = smtplib.SMTP(email['smtp'])
to
server = smtplib.SMTP(email['smtp'], email_smtp)
I can work up a patch if needed, but it seems pretty simply. For the
past few weeks I have no longer been getting emails from safekeep since
Comcast started blocking outbound Port 25.

This is release 1.4.2 of SafeKeep, a centralized and easy to use backup application that combines the best features of a mirror and an incremental backup. This is primarily a bug fix update, but what's new in this release: - Report setup errors in summary reports. - Added a flag to disable a backup configuration file. - Added new targets for building Debian source packages. - A number of bug fixes for Python compatibility and other errors. Many thanks to Henrik Riomar and Terry Phelps for their bug reports and fixes that made this release possible, and to Dimi Paun for his continual work with SafeKeep. Henrik, I've just checked in a number of changes that should track setup errors. It is likely to still have a few bugs, but seems to be fairly stable. Let me know if you see any. It should be pushed out to a new release very soon. Folks, In line SourceForge the SafeKeep SVN repository has moved. The new URL is http://svn.code.sf.net/p/safekeep/code/ The website download page has also been updated with this URL, and it means that the SourceForge Code tab now refers to the correct repository. If you are still using the old repository, be aware that after today it will not receive any further updates and at some time in the near future will be made Read-Only, and may even be deleted. Regards Frank |

Terry, Yes, you probably don't want to backup that mount point, however, the original original problem you listed seems to be a problem within rdiff-backup itself. I've seen it a few times, and it appears that some of the metadata within rdiff-backup is incorrect, but it can't update it. I've only been able to correct it by excluding those files (or tree) from the next backup and then adding it in again. Frank On Fri, 2013-03-15 at 21:44 -0400, Terry Phelps wrote: > Oh, wait.
