Karl, The issue is really why rdiff-backup is failing. Is this an old backup with lots of incrementals or a fairly new one. I have had this sort of problem before, and it takes a bit of effort to clean up rdiff-backup, and it depends on the actual error. Either way, please run safekeep -v --server to get the error from rdiff-backup printed, and if that is not clear, try safekeep -v -v -v --server for the debug output.
