I assume you are doing a local user installation.  Have you set your
environment variables correctly for dynamic library loading?  i.e.
LD_LIBRARY_PATH, (and for gcc: LIBRARY_PATH, C_INCLUDE_PATH)?

These little environment settings are a pain, this is why I would
normally recommend asking to your system administrator to simply install
the binary packages.  But I know that your sysadmin is pretty busy these
days... :-)  So, just let me know if this helps.
