Neither could I. I discussed that with Etienne (on IRC) soon after he
sent the mail. The report was bogus.

Apparently nobody, as long as one is using rather old tar, ex. from
Woody. This version works fine:

$ tar --version
tar (GNU tar) 1.13.25
