Have any of your seen the PocketLinux project? They are taking various palm devices and installing a Linux kernel along with the Kaffe Virtual Machine. Apparently, most applications (and the handwriting recognition software) are written Java: http://www.pocketlinux.com/ The really neat thing is that you can pick up a VTech Helio palm device (which retails for $149) and install this stuff. With a 75Mhz Risc chip, 8 Megs of RAM (+ 2 Megs of flash storage) that's quite a nice little unit. An interesting contrast is my first "powerful" PC (which I used to write my Masters Thesis). It was a 25 Mhz Intel 386, with 8 Megs of RAM and a "large" 40 Meg Hard Disk. I haggled the sales people down to about $1,300 for that little beauty! Anyway, I'll just bet SableVM could work on that device as well, if we ported all appropriate native classes. (Obviously this will wait until SableVM's functionality is better on a full-fledged machine)! -Brent |
