Hi,

I've been using RAA for quite a while now with no problems. Since yesterday, when I start my computer the taskbar is not displayed. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del does not display the task manager either.

What could have changed? Any idea how to fix this?

Thanks,

Glen.

If the shell, in our case RunAsAdmin explorer.exe can not start correctly and it could not start the real (windows) explorer.exe, you will not see a taskbar either.
To fix this change back the shell registry entry to it's original value like suggested here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/runasadmin/forums/forum/543633/topic/1706114

    Hi Istvan,

Yes, I know how to restore the Windows shell, but how do I fix RAA? Why doesn't it work all of a sudden?

    Glen.

Please try to uninstall than reinstall RAA, that should delete all registry settings.
Alternatively you can manually delete RAA registry settings under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\RunAsAdmin.

Let me know please if it fixed the problem.
    Thanks!

Nope, I've done that about 3 or 4 times now. I thought it may be a bad policy file, so I opted to overwrite it at installation time, but that didn't fix the problem either.

You mean, when uninstalled RAA (and/or deleted registry entries and %SYSTEMROOT%\Shim directory) everything got back to normal, than after reinstalled the program the same taskbar problem occures at the first (re)login!?

    That's correct (although I didn't delete the Shim directory – should I?).

Not necessary, if you let the installer overwrite the policy.xml.
I'm sure this problem has nothing to do with RAA. It's some kind of privilege problem of the windows shell.
Couldn't you find anything in the event log about a shell startup error!?
Try to revoke your admin rights (be a normal user) when RAA is uninstalled, will the windows shell startup normally in that case!?

I found entries like these in the event log:

    [1]
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( RunAsAdmin ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: 596|1528|.\ConfirmationDialog.cpp|139|5|SetThreadDesktop hOrigDesktop Failed<CR><LF>The requested resource is in use..

    [2]
    Agent execution failed. Expression "pAgent->Run(subject, &vaContext, pSignal, (va.Clear(), &va))" (line 1631) returned error 0x80020009
    (null)

    [3]
LevelRecord error. Expression "CheckLevelRecord(subject, &vaParameters, pSignal, V_BOOL(&fIgnoreAnnoyng), policyDoc, recordElement, levelPolicyPathes[i].level, nRecordIndex, agents, scripts, pNewLevel)" (line 1897) returned error 0x80020009
    (null)

    [4]
Faled to open event. Expression "(FAILED(hr = GetLastError())?hr:HRESULT_FROM_WIN32(hr))" (line 2252) returned error 0x80070002
    (null)

I have no idea what these messages mean, but maybe you do.

The Windows shell works fine when running as a limited user.
