It would be useful if one could change and apply settings without clicking the 'OK' button and having the options window closed.

Settings could either apply immediately (on state change), or there could be an 'Apply' button.

Although this one is also already member of our TASK list and has a bigger relative priority, we must delay it a bit because of relative complexity of the current implementation of the settings dialog.
