That is also a good idea. A friend suggested an AppleScript, like in
system('osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to display dialog 
"You need Leopard to use this application" ');

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. It's good to think 
'out-of-the-box' sometimes.
