my first post on the forum. i have a dtv 5040 and a directv 435RH. i simply want to use the 5040 as a video recorder to record off the directv. Is this possible??
i have a subscription to directv service, but no subscription to the replaytv service.
I have searched the archives but no info is available. Pls provide me with links that I can read how to do this. Thanks for your advice...

If I am still required to purchase activation from replaytv, can I still use the 5040(ethernet port) via broadband to get updates.

You have to have a subscription, and yes the Ethernet works for updates.
