I run a mac - most of the time I run firefox. If I see an "RSS Feed Icon", and
click on it I would hope that it would activate RSSOWL to subscribe me, but
what will happen, is that Safari fires up and goes to the feed. I can then cut
and paste it into RSSOWL to create a feed, but this seems cumbersome... I have
gone looking for preference settings that might relate to this, but nothing is
    obvious...

Yeah an issue on the Mac, have never found out why this happens. Somehow the
URL is not passed into RSSOwl when clicked from Firefox.

Is there any way you can change the mime type handling in safari?

    I set

    application/rdf+xml
    text/rdf
    application/atom+xml
    application/rss+xml

    to be opened with RSSOwl.

This works in most cases, but not all. A known issue is that the file's MIME
type is not reported correctly – this is a server configuration issue.

btw: I'm using Opera on Linux

another thing: if I set text/xml to be opened with RSSOwl I all feeds are
opened in RSSOwl but this breaks some websites
