I am running RSSOwl 2.1.6, build version 2012-12-08, on Ubuntu 12.04. Numerous feeds display properly so I am discounting a firewall issue.

However, mathbabe, http://mathbabe.org/feed/, displays the following message when loaded into a browser:

This page contains the following errors:

error on line 399 at column 31: Input is not proper UTF-8, indicate encoding !
    Bytes: 0x03 0x26 0x23 0x38
Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.

The icon for mathbabe appears with a small red x.

I have been able to duplicate the problem several times.

Now I have encountered a similar message at, http://chrisblattman.com/feed/, which reads:

error on line 250 at column 31: Input is not proper UTF-8, indicate encoding !
    Bytes: 0x0C 0x66 0x69 0x6E

When I visit the two feed links you posted in Chromium 25, I got the same error. Is it possible that RSSOwl is using Chromium to display pages, which complains about a UTF-8 error? I opened the pages in FireFox 20, and I didn't get any errors. You could try manually specifying "Dorg.eclipse.swt.browser.XULRunnerPath" in order to use another browser, see this link for more information on how to do that: http://www.rssowl.org/help#item_6j

    Thanks for confirming the error!

For Ubuntu users, the "installation" directory is /usr/lib/rssowl and the file you are looking for is RSSOwl.ini. I had to be root to edit it.

I reset the XULRunner but that did not fix the problem.

If you right click on a feed icon, you can choose properties. The last tab is status, which is this case had a red X. Choose Find out more, which takes you to http://feedvalidator.org/, which reports (for http://chrisbattman.com/feed/ that:

line 254, column 25: XML parsing error: <unknown>:254:25: not well-formed (invalid token) [help]

blockquote p …we find evidence that inflation is less present in ar ...

with a small red up angle pointing to the "f" in "find"

I loaded the feed into oXygen and discovered the Unicode character 0xc immediately before the "f" in "find." (form feed, therefore not visible)

Deleted the form feed character and the static version of the feed loads with no problem. Have contacted the author.

BTW, have also heard back from http://mathbabe.org and that feed now works. (similar invalid character issue)

Apologies for the detail but I am likely to see this again and will have forgotten the solution. ;-)

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!
