There are multiple ways:
1. Right-Click and select "mark -> as unread" from context menu
2. Click on the symbol in the "title" row (classical view)
3. select a key binding from "Edit -> Preferences -> Key Bindings" for that action

I see ways to mark unread items as "read", individually or all in a feed or globally. Is there any way to mark a read item as "unread"?

Many thanks, in all of those methods I had missed the concept that in RSSOwl the term "Mark Read" is not a simple command but it is a toggle.
That is totally un-intuitive.
There should be 2 menu items (or the toggle should be Mark Read and - if it's read - Mark Unread).
