I see nothing wrong in utilizing smarty. The framework was always meant to be implemented into other systems and applications. So why not in smarty. If thats what you want to do with it :)

I am afraid, this won't work atm.
At the current state, the framework can only be used to generate RSS 2.0 feeds, but not to read them in again.
However, we were discussing this internally and this should not be too hard to do. Keep an eye on your mailbox. We will mail you about this.
