Could you please include a library of basic terrain types for unbound maps, things like dark rock, forest undergrowth, sand, etc?  I know that you can import your own, but if players do something unexpected you can quickly knock up a map for them.

      Unbounded maps other than grass
You can create unbounded maps using any background image you like, the grass is just a default to make setting up a simple map super easy.  To create an unbounded map using a different background, select an image from the Image Explorer, right click, select New Unbounded Map, and there you go.

This of course presumes you have more background textures :)  We have a tracker item to create a basic image repository to distribute with MapTool, which would include several different unbounded map textures.  We're looking for someone to help compile that default repository.  If you or someone you know would like to help out, we would be happy to include it :)

Alas my artistic skill leans more towards finger painting and four legged horses which more closely resemble sausages on cocktail sticks ;p

I too have no artistic talent but is there a specific size that is needed for the texture?
We might be able to get the textures we need from the Neverwinter Nights Vault site, they have a ton of textures.

Textures can be any size you want.  They don't even have to be square.

They do need to be completely license free though in order to put them into the core tool, so that we don't run into legal problems.

As a side note, to create the grass image, I did a google image search for "lawn", found one in the right perspective, cut out a section of it, then tiled it.  If anything, we'll end up doing that same process for a couple different scenes.

That brings up a good question: what would you all consider a reasonable "default" list of textures ?  There's grass, probably need dirt, water, and cobblestone (cityscape?).  What else ?

I don't know anything about this program except that google found it for me.  If anyone wants to play with it to create background images for us, please feel free.

If you go to http://www.dungeoncrafter.com/ you will find quite a good number of appropriate textures, and also a good bounded map maker.

The textures are hidden under "new tiles" or "downloads" or somethin, but they're there.

Also, existing programs, esp. games such as Age of Mythology often have nice textures already included in them, which can be used for basic terrain with some effort.

Note that the tile maker link is broken, but it's site is cool. http://www.harmware.net/ is the programs current home, and also has some neat tiles, not much good for this, but still...
