no updates in year and I haven't seen any new articles in quite a while. Is this project dead?
Not dead in the least. Most of my focus has been in the way of evangelizing OpenRPGUI via speaking at trade shows (I have four of them in 2 weeks time right now and they all have sessions dealing with OpenRPGUI).

I will also be writing about PhoneGap.com + OpenRPGUI in the near future.
There will also be a smaller release or OpenRPGUI coming soon that addresses some JSON *SRVPGM changes.
