There's still an option to set a background image (I found it in configuration manager -> profile -> Scrolling -> "Image file") but it doesn't seem to have any effect, and the setting is reset to the default next time I open the configuration manager.

It also used to be possible to set this programatically via eg. dbus-send --session /net/sf/roxterm/Options net.sf.roxterm.Options.StringOption string:Profiles/MYPROFILE string:background_img 'string:/path/to/MYIMAGE.jpg'
... but this has no effect either, and just silently exits 0.

    Bug? Removed feature? User error?

The current version works correctly for me in Ubuntu 14.10 and Debian jessie, but I do remember noticing at one point that it didn't work in one of Debian or Ubuntu and did in the other. I think the background options in vte were considered to be buggy and a problem to maintain, so the developers were going to remove them altogether, but relented under pressure from users (must be a different bunch of developers from the rest of GTK and GNOME then!).

Can you see if both the GTK2 and GTK3 versions are affected? What version of vte are you using now? On Ubuntu I currently have 2.90/0.36.3 and on Debian 2.91/0.38.1.
